dry shampoo good or bad

Dry Shampoo – Good or Bad?

Dry shampooing might be convenient, but is it good or bad for your hair?

Dry shampoo might be a life saver to make the hair look a little bit better when it’s feeling a little bit greasy, but it’s not a great idea to use it all the time, and certainly not a replacement for your regular shampoo that’s for sure..

I personally use dry shampoo because my hair can get oily quite fast. I do like the feeling and the way my hair looks after a proper wash using my regular shampoo or clarifying shampoo, which I use about every 2 weeks or so.

But sometimes having a dry shampoo at hand in the time of nee is good. I usually stick to dry shampoo brands which have natural ingredients and are cruelty free.

There’s also Batiste, which are a popular brand that a lot of people like when it comes to dry shampoos.

dry shampoo: good or bad?

Well, let’s just first say that dry shampoo itself is not bad. The ingredients used in dry shampoos are pretty safe and don’t tend to cause damage directly to the hair itself. There are however many different pros and cons that I think are definitely worth mentioning, so you can better decide if you want to give dry shampoo a go.

The pros of using dry shampoo

    1. Washing your hair every day with shampoo products which strip away all of the oils from the hair is not great, so using a dry shampoo to lengthen the period between washes might actually be a good thing.
    2.  It helps increase volume in the hair. If the hair feels weighed down and a bit flat, using dry shampoo can help boost the volume of your hair so it looks better. This is great for women and men who have fine hair especially.
    3. You’ll probably be using less heat on your hair. Using hair dryers, flat ironing and other things when styling can damage your hair.
    4. It’s just simply convenient. If you don’t have the time to wash your hair all the time, especially if you’re active, the dry shampoo can help.
    5. It’s good for people who have trouble washing their often because of a physical reason.

The CONS of using dry shampoo

    1. The main con of using dry shampoo is that it really doesn’t clean the hair properly and remove all of the build up that you have in your hair. So therefore, as I said, it’s not a an adequate replacement  It should just complement your regular wash routine.
    2. Not great for those who suffer from scalp issues like dermatitis, dandruff, and other problems. It can, if used frequently,  make the problem worse.
    3. Dry shampoos can cause the scalp to start producing less oil over time. You’re basically training your scalp to produce less oil because it’s not being washed properly.
    4. Some shampoos leave some residue behind and flakes. Not a great look!
    5. It can make the hair look dull if you get into the habit of using it all the time without properly washing your hair with regular shampoo.

Should you use a dry shampoo?

Well that depends. If you’re an active person and you sweat a lot, plus you have oily hair in general, then sure, I think having at hand and using a dry shampoo can be convenient and useful for times when your hair looks bad, but you don’t really have enough time to wash it. My hair tends to get oily a little fast, so for me having a dry shampoo is super useful.

If your hair is a little on the dry side, and you don’t need to wash it all that often anyway, then I’d say you probably don’t need a dry shampoo as part of your hair routine unless you’re lazy when it comes to washing your hair or you don’t think you’ll have access to a shower or bath for some time . 🙂

If you do decide to try out a Dry Shampoo product, then the things to look out for when buying a dry shampoo are the following:

  1. Make sure that it has natural ingredients and doesn’t contain anything that will  irritate your scalp.
  2. Avoid products with parabens and other toxic ingredients.
  3. I usually go for the cheap brands and save my money for more expensive shampoos and conditioners. However, this is entirely up to you. There are some good cheap options available, which I think are fine. But you can also try the more expensive salon brands.

How to use the dry shampoo

To get the best results from the shampoo, you want to make sure that you’re using it correctly.

  • Don’t use it on wet hair.
  • Spray at a distance of at least six inches from the hair. You don’t want to concentrate it too much in one part.
  • Try to section the hair and make sure it’s sprayed equally all over.
  • Bush your hair afterwards so you can help spread the powder across the hair shafts.
  • And of course, always best to read the instructions.

Also one last thing… because the process of shampooing your hair allows you to essentially exfoliate the scalp and remove dead skin, consider adding a product that will exfoliate the scalp like a hair mask.

Best Hair Dryer To Prevent Damage

best hair dryer to prevent damageChoosing A Hair Dryer that won’t cause damage and will DRy HAIr FAST

I’m a big proponent of letting your hair dry naturally, but many times that’s just not possible. Fortunately there are good quality hair dryers available that work with you to prevent heat damage. There are also useful methods for how you can blow dry your hair without damaging it, and I’ll talk about those later.

Since I don’t have all the time in the world to let my hair dry every time I wash it, I need to use a hair dryer sometimes. So, investing in a good hair dryer which doesn’t cause damage and can dry the hair quickly is an important investment for anyone who is trying to grow and maintain long hair that is healthy.

There are many different criteria that we should look out for when we purchase a hair dryer. The key things that you should look for are the following:

  • At least 1800 watts and above.
  • Has Ionic Technology
  • You are able to use attachments
  • Heat settings and Airflow settings
  • Cool Shot Button
  • Long cable

Before deciding…

Remember that you’re investing in something that you are going to be using often and possibly for years. So think about that when deciding which one you want to go for. Choosing a quality product will always give better results.

I have listed below three different Hair Dryers that will dry and style your hair without causing hardly any heat damage (if any) in the process.

  1.  Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer (high-end professional hair dryer)
  2. The T3 Featherweight Luxe 21 Hair Dryer (mid-range professional hair dryer)
  3. Kadori Professional Blow Dryer (low-end professional hair dryer)

1. The Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer (high end)

So, you’ve probably heard of Dyson vacuum cleaners, which are pretty good! Well, you can expect nothing less from their Supersonic Hair Dryer.

This hair dryer meets all of our criteria and some more. It contains smart technology using it’s microprocessor to measure temperature of the air flow at 20 times per second, and intelligently adjusts the heating element as you dry your hair, which means that your hair never overheats and you don’t risk damaging your hair because it stays at a constant temperature.

The hair dryer comes with many features and accessories such as: 4 Heat Settings, 3 Airflow Settings, Cold Shot, Ionizer, Filters, Concentrator, Diffusor and more.

It is expensive, but this hair dryer would be my top pick. Watch the video below and also Click to see more details.

How their technology helps prevent damage when blow drying.

2. The T3 Featherweight Luxe 2i Hair Dryer

This hair dryer works great for people with thick hair and also generates negative ions, meaning you can dry your hair much faster than with regular cheap blow dryers.

With tourmaline + SoftAireTM technology, it was proven to be healthier than air-drying. It also won best beauty breakthrough in 2013.

It include many different features, including: 2 Speed Settings, 3 Heat Settings, Cool Shot Button, Concentrator Long  ft cord, among things.

This hair dryer is an excellent choice for those of us who can’t afford the more expensive option like the Dyson, but still want a quality hair dryer that will get the job done well and last a long time. Click to more details.

3. Kadori professional blow dryer 2500 x ceramic with ionic technology

A great hair dryer from Kadori, which is a more affordable hair dryer without breaking the bank. It also has Ionic technology, and is 1875 watts.

Using the L I A 2500 x-air technology, Kadori claims that its hair dryer can reduce time to trying by up to 70%, which means much less heat damage. Not bad for a lower priced, professional hair dryer.

The hair dryer also has several features including: 2 Wind Speed power settings, 3 temperature settings, and a cool shot button

It also has a longer cable than the other two at 11ft, which gives more freedom to move around.

The dryer also has a diffuser and concentrator included in the box as well.

See more information here.

What to look for when choosing a hair dryer

There are a few important things that you need to look out for if you want to buy the best hair dryer to keep your long hair looking healthy and attractive. Not investing in a good quality hair dryer will make it much more difficult to maintain long hair, unless you have your own schedule and aren’t ever leaving the house.

blow drying with less damage

More power, less damage

Choose a hair dryer that has more power. I would recommend a hair dryer that is at least 1800 watts. If you have thick hair like me, you probably want to go for something a bit more powerful. The less time that you have the hair dryer heating your hair, the less damage there will be.

Negative Ions

If you want to dry your hair fast, then look for an ionic function on the hair dryer. This will help evaporate moisture more quickly, and so you’ll spend less time blow drying your hair, which again means less damage.

To help diffuse or concentrate heat, many hair dryers come with attachments that will be useful depending on your hair type and how you want to style your hair.

Attachments

Attachments like concentrators and diffusers are important for certain types of hair, different styles and protecting from concentrating too much heat in one area.

Has heat settings and cool shot button

You’ll want blow dryer that has various heat settings. This seems like a no-brainer, right? We need more speed and less heat. A cool shot button is also useful to prevent over-drying of the hair. When your hair is mostly dry, perhaps a little damp, just use the cool shot button and finish off.

Quality material and light

Many of the professional hair dryers are made with better quality materials and so they will last longer, and feel lighter than the cheaper models.

Long Cable

Having a longer power cord is important for a couple of reasons. One reason is that it’s safer and gives you more room to move around. If you’re drying someone else’s hair or your own, and the power socket isn’t near, then having a longer cord is useful. It’s also not recommended to use an extension cable to these devices either because of the power they draw.

How to dry your hair with minimal damage

If you’re drying your hair incorrectly, then you can easily damage your hair, making it look dull and dry. But I guess you probably know that by now.

There  was a study that really surprised me when I read it a few years ago. It basically shows that not only can you dry your hair with very little damage, but drying your hair with a hair dryer is less damaging than air drying! Who would have thought?

As long as the temperature did not exceed 95 degrees C,  and the hair dryer was held at a distance of approximately 15 cm with continuous motion, there was actually less damage than drying the hair naturally.

If you were to use the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer then these overheating issues won’t be a concern because their microprocessor enables the hair dryer to automatically adjust, so it remains at a constant temperature.

But if you’re using some of the cheaper options, like most of us, then this is good news because no longer do we have to worry so much about damaging our hair when using a hair dryer.

Girl sleeping on the bed

Satin Head Scarves For Sleeping

Why You Should wear a Satin HAIR scarf when you go to bed

There are many reasons why women with long hair (and some men perhaps) should consider wearing a scarf, cap or something, just to protect their hair when they sleep – if they want to keep their long hair in really great condition.

If you have really long hair, you’ll totally get what I mean! The twisting, turning, and rubbing against the pillows leaves your hair in less-than-perfect shape. I’ve woken up more than a few times with crazy hair! I think they call it “bed head?” 🙂

But it’s a pretty easy problem to solve. And there are very good reasons why you should try to wear something like a satin head scarf at night to protect your hair.

Caring for your hair at night is super important in the process of growing out your hair. A good hair routine can make all the difference between success and failure.

There many different styles and different materials to choose from. You can either choose a silk headscarf or a satin headscarf. As a vegan, I think going for a satin headscarf would be better, but it’s entirely up to you.

So why should you wear Satin scarf to bed?

Below are five different reasons and benefits you’ll get by using either a head scarf, cap or hair bonnet at night.

1. You Save Time (in the morning)

Some days I wake up and my hair is great, it’s kind of wavy, and doesn’t need much brushing. And then there are some days I wake up when my hair really tangled and just a mess. The worst is when I’m late for something and I’m trying to brush my hair, but at the same time not destroy it in the process!

Well, with something to protect the hair at night and stop it from getting all tangled in the first place, this would save a lot of time than what would otherwise be spent meticulously trying to detangle hair before heading off to work in the morning!

2. Your Hair is Better Hydrated

If you’re sleeping on cotton pillows, this can cause moisture loss from your hair and cause it to become dry and brittle, which can ultimately lead to split ends. You’ll also notice a lot less frizz going on as well!

People with naturally curly hair will definitely benefit most from using a head scarf at night because curly hair tend to be a lot more dry and prone to breaking.

3. Less hair pulling, Less hair loss

Most people use cotton pillows to sleep on, and if you do too, then you also risk pulling and breaking your hair because of the friction that the cotton creates. Wearing a head scarf will stop this from happening, so you’ll experience less hair hair breakage and thus faster hair growth.

4. No Soreness

Have you ever woken up with a part of your scalp feeling sore? Well, I have. It’s because the hair is being pulled into a position that is not normal. For people who wear hair bands and put their hair in a pony tail, this can also cause the problem. This problem can also be solved by using a hair scarf.

5. Good for skin!

If you’re using products in your hair, or heavy conditioners, then this product ultimately ends up on the pillow, which can of course cause breakouts. The natural oils from your hair also get absorbed by the pillows too. By wearing a scarf at night, you will not just being doing your hair a favor, but your skin will thank you as well. Using a satin pillow case would also be a great idea!

And to finish…

Before I leave you with a little video, I hope you now understand why caring for your hair at night is really important. I think a night routine is one of the things people most neglect when it comes to their skin and hair.

In the long tun, by taking those extra steps to care for your hair, it’ll help the growing process, make the hair just more healthier looking, and it’ll simply save time!

best clarifying shampoo to remove build up

Best Clarifying Shampoo To Remove Build Up

What is the best clarifying shampoo for dull and lifeless hair?

Have you ever used hair products which made your hair look amazing and feel great, but then they seem to just stop working? Well, you probably need to just use a clarifying shampoo.

Women often use multiple hair products, which all build up in the hair. This causes the hair to lose its color and makes it look dull. The hair also becomes weighed down with product build up, and tends to look and feel stringy.

Clarifying shampoo is designed to strip away all of the impurities and oils in the hair, leaving your hair in its natural state. It’s really surprising how much dirt, oil and other products the hair can absorb over time.

If you want to restore your hair back to life again, then a clarifying shampoo is the first step to do that, so you can start anew.

What is product buildup and what causes it?

There many many things which can contribute to the build up of substances in your hair. These are just a few of them.

Use of hair waxes: This is one of the big culprits for buildup in the hair. It’s difficult to remove, but can be done with a good clarifying shampoo.

Silicones: Silicones can be found in a lot of different hair products on the market. They  are good in that they help make the hair feel smoother and look better. However, since they form a film on the hair strands – which is great for detangling hair – it means that it can be difficult to properly clean the hair. The product can build up over time and it’s one of the reasons why most people notice their hair getting worse over time when they continue to use their normal products which contain this ingredient.

Not washing the product out: We’ve all been there, when we’re in a rush and we’ve not fully rinsed out all of the product in our hair. Maybe you’ve left a heavy conditioner in the hair (or most of it) like I did, and just forgot to rinse. Trying to get it out can be a nightmare, but fortunately most clarifying shampoo’s will do the job.

Non-porous hair: Some people have hair that is not as porous and therefore the product doesn’t get absorbed well through the cuticles. The product will lay on the hair and lead to buildup over time.

There are other ingredients which might be ‘water soluble’ but that doesn’t mean you can easily rinse them out with water.

If you want to avoid product buildup in the future, try to use less of these products and style your hair in a way that doesn’t require so much product.

However, if you really have to use things like Silicones, then a good clarifying shampoo should remove the product buildup quite well.

Choosing The Best Clarifying Shampoo For Your Hair

Since using a clarifying shampoo can strip away almost all of the hair’s natural oils, you should probably start of with a mild product and see how you go. Even the most mild hair clarifying products can be very effective in restoring life and bounce back to your hair.

If you’ve never used a clarifying shampoo before, you will likely be surprised how much better your hair can look.

I’ve decided to share just two clarifying shampoo’s. One of them is a typical store brand shampoo, and the other is a professional grade clarifying shampoo. I’d personally recommend going for the cheaper product first, but it’s entirely up to you.

Neutrogena Shampoo – Anti Residue

This is the first product that I used when I began to clarify my hair. And boy did it make a huge difference.

I made the mistake of using a really heavy product on my hair, which made it feel terrible.

After using Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo, my hair felt shiny, silky and soft again.

Neutrogena claims that the shampoo ‘Instantly Removes 90% of Dulling Residue’

They recommend to use it once a week ( I prefer once every two weeks).

Neutrogena anti-residue shampoo is also suitable for all hair types.

Nuetrogena is a store brand and is relatively cheap. If you want to find out more information about the product, you can go over to Amazon.

Professional Grade Clarifying Shampoo by Kenra

If you’re not on a tight budget, then I would recommend trying out a professional grade clarifying shampoo.

This product contains extracts of Grapefruit and Witch Haze, along with chelators for eliminating hair dulling residue and built up.

This shampoo is especially good for those washing their hair with hard water or swimmers.

The product is suitable for those who have highlighted, beached, or gray hair.

It’s also suitable for those who have colored their hair.

See more information and reviews of the product on Amazon.

After clarifying your hair, always follow up with a good moisture restoring conditioner

If you’ve never used a clarifying shampoo before, then you probably don’t realise just how dry hair can feel once you’ve stripped away all the natural oils.

To stop the hair from becoming brittle, frizzy and breaking, always follow up clarifying your hair with a good conditioner.

Leave the conditioner in your hair for a few minutes to let it absorb into the hair, then wash off as normal.

Hair masks or deep conditioning is also something that I recommend to people who are using these types of products. You don’t have to use them often, but just treat your hair every now and then.

Your old hair products don’t work anymore?

One of the most annoying things is that you find a good hair product, and it works great at the start, but slowly your hair starts to look rubbish.

I used to use a brand called Herbal Essences and it seemed great for my hair at first. Until my hair became greasy, flat, dull and just not great. But after using a clarifying shampoo, I was able to use the product again (although I did eventually change my shampoo).

Having a clarifying shampoo at hand is also useful because if you are experimenting and trying out new hair products, then at least you have a clarifying shampoo to remove all of the product quickly if there is a disaster and regular shampoo doesn’t work to remove the built up hair products.

And finally…  Any hair products that you thought were great in the past, but just ‘stopped working’ – perhaps you can give them another shot! What you should find is that they work just as great as they did the first time you tried them.

African American woman long hair

How To Grow Long Natural Hair For African American

Many African American women use lots of harsh products on their hair which are very damaging and cause weakened hair that is prone to breaking. As a result the hair grows more slowly making it difficult to achieve the results that you desire. I want to share with you a few tips on how to grow long natural hair for African Americans.

As with all types of hair, it is important to look after it and treat it well. Here I will help you choose the right products to grow long hair naturally for African American women (and men).

Easy Steps To Growing African American Hair Faster

First step is to look at your diet! As with all hair, it requires nutrients to grow properly. Below I will give you a few ideas of what foods to eat so your hair will feel and look better while you’re growing it out.

1. Avocado

Avocado for shiner hair

Avocados are mostly made of goods fats which will help keep the hair soft and shiny. Some women produce very little oil on their scalp, and since African American Women tend to have curly hair, this can make dry hair an even bigger problem.

2. Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes provide vitamin A for growing long hair

Sweet potatoes are a fantastic source of vitamin A which is crucial for proper functioning of the skin and cell division. Consuming Sweet Potatoes with fat like extra virgin olive oil will help you absorb the beta carotene.

3. Eggs

eggs are good for growing long hair

Eggs are a staple of the diet for many people. The white part of the egg provides quality protein that our hair needs to grow and the fat in the egg provides us with minerals and is a great source of choline.

4. KALE

Kale provides minerals for hair growth

Leafy Greens should be consumed every day as they are one of the best sources of vitamins and minerals. If there’s one food you shouldn’t skimp on it would leafy greens. A good alternative to kale would be spinach. These vegetables also contain different caretonoids which benefit our skin and hair.

5. SALMON

Salmon provides essential oils for hair growth

Salmon is a great source of Vitamin D. African American women who want to grow long hair should be especially careful to get adequate levels of vitamin D. This Vitamin is essential for hair growth, and a deficiency can cause hair loss. Salmon also provides a lot of protein and omega 3 which is an essential fatty acid.

By consuming these foods your body will give your hair what it needs to grow. Not only will you experience faster hair growth but your skin will also benefit from eating these foods.

Hair growth requires patience, but you can speed it up by doing the correct things. Hair length can be determined by genetics, but you want to reach your full potential. The only way you will do that is by providing the best condition within the body and to the scalp for optimal hair growth.

Growing long hair is all about having a good routine . . .

Now that we’ve gotten diet out of the way, let’s look at what African American’s can do to grow out healthy hair faster. It’s all about the routine and what kind of products you use on your hair.

Pre-shampoo your hair

These shampoos basically help protect your hair and stop it losing all the essential oils when you wash it with a shampoo. Dry hair often leads to brittle and fragile hair and you don’t want that. Pre shampoos are recommended for all hair types, not just African American women.

The results of using a pre-shampoo will be that the hair feels silky and smooth after you wash it with a shampoo. And while it’s not necessary to use a pre-shampoo for great looking hair, it certainly does help.

One product that I highly recommend and has great reviews is: Burt’s Bees Avocado Butter Pre-Shampoo Hair Treatment

This is a great product as it contains natural oils which will help make your hair feel amazing.

Pick the right shampoo for you

We’ve all probably gone through several shampoos trying to find out which one best suits our hair. Some shampoos are just too heavy and weigh the hair down, and some don’t get the job done and leave our hair looking dull.

For African American hair, this is where you have to go gentle and not use anything that is too harsh and cause the hair to become dry and develop lots of split ends and breaking off.

When choosing the shampoo for your hair, make sure that the shampoo has many natural ingredients and is sulphate free. Sulphates are what can dry out the hair the most when using regular shampoos.

Products that I recommend are:

Arvazallia Advanced Hair Repair Shampoo and Conditioner Set – A professional grade treatment that will leave the hair feeling amazing. I high recommend this one for someone who wants the best. Check out the reviews!

CREME OF NATURE Argan Oil Moisture Shine Shampoo & Intensive Treatment Set – This is less expensive but still a great choice.

Make sure that you condition your hair every time you wash it. People with naturally straight hair can sometimes get away with not conditioning their hair after every wash, but for African women and men, this will only lead to problems.

Hold off on washing too often

We all love the smell and feel of squeaky clean hair, but you have to make sure that you don’t wash it too frequently. Washing too much can lead dry hair and cause it to break off. Try training yourself to washing it once a week or even once every 2 weeks if you can.

Avoid blow drying your hair

If you have to, then use a low heat setting. The best way to grow out healthy hair is to let it air-dry as often as you can. I know that you might be rushed for time, so make sure you can allow enough time before getting ready to go out.

Comb your hair but be gentle!

You want use a wide-tooth comb when combing your hair out. Start at the ends and work upwards. Combing the hair helps move the oils down the shaft of the hair.

When brushing or combing hair, it is always best to allow it to dry a little first. Hair becomes stretchy / bouncy when it’s when and it can easily snap and become deformed.

Other things that may help hair growth

Sleep – Make sure that you get enough rest. You want to get at least 6-8 hours of sleep every night so that your body can repair itself properly and divert its resources to less important things like your hair. Lack of sleep ages our skin and our hair because it’s extremely stressful on the body.  If you’re not sleeping well, then you could try something like melatonin, l-theanine or buy a sleepy tea with some herbs to help you sleep.

Exercise – Exercise gets our blood pumping and improves blood flow to the entire body including the skin. The hair will grow better when there is good blow flow to the scalp providing the hair follicles with the nutrients it needs.

Relax – Try to deal with stress better. We all have stress in our lives but what makes the difference is how we deal with it. I find yoga is a great way to help me deal with stress and helps me feel more relaxed. Do what works for you (as long as it’s healthy!)

I hope these tips have been helpful to you! And I wish you success in growing your beautiful hair!
