what kind of hair hairbrush should I use

What Kind Of Hairbrush Should I Use?

Best hair Brush for your HAIR TYPE

There are many different types of hair brushes and combs that you can use for your hair, but each one has a different purpose and will give different results when you use them. Knowing the best brush to use can really help, especially if you have long hair and are growing it out.

Choosing the right brush will help you keep your hair healthier, it will help you style it better, and choosing the right brush will cause less damage when you are brushing your hair.

One type of brush that everyone should have is a Paddle Brush. Great for all types of hair.

Most people will need a few types of brushes, not just one. This will depend on whether or not you want to style it a certain way or whether the hair is damp or wet.

What are BristleS on Hair Brushes?

First of all, I thought I should explain what are bristles and why the type of bristle is important when choosing a hairbrush.

Bristles are simply a stiff hair that are usually used on certain tools, like a paintbrush for example. There are natural bristles which can be found on animals, and also synthetic bristles which are created from materials like nylon.

The bristles are arranged differently on each brush, and this will make a different in how you use the brush and what you use it for.

Below are the three most common types of bristles that you’ll find on hair brushes.

Synthetic Bristles

Often made from Nylon, these are cheaper than boar bristle brushes, and although do a decent job in creating volume with your hair, and great for a blow out, they don’t tend to distribute the natural oils down the hair shaft as well as a boar bristle brush can.

Also, being a synthetic material, there is more chance of hair pulling when brushing and thus damaging the hair.

On the plus side, these tend to create less static in the hair and good for those who have thick hair.

Type of hair: Good for normal and thicker hair.

Mixed Bristles

A mix of both natural and synthetic that is great for those with long hair. Mixed bristle brushes tend to be good for detangling thicker hair.

Type of hair: Mixed bristles are great for people with with curly and frizzy hair.

Boar Bristles

You can spend a lot of money on a brush, and people who are investing in growing their hair will want to use the best brushes. Boar bristles tend to be more flexible than the synthetic type, so they can be less damaging as they don’t snag the hair as much. They also are better able to distribute the natural oils your scalp produces, down the shaft of the hair, creating a better shine and conditioning.

Natural boar bristles also help massage the scalp, thus stimulating the scalp by increasing blood flow and gently exfoliating the scalp removing dead skin cells, so hair follicles don’t get clogged up, which can cause irritation and other problems.

Type of hair: Boar bristle brushes are also an excellent choice for people who have fine hair.

TL;DR: Summary

  • For fine hair choose a natural boar material
  • For thick hair choose either a mix or synthetic brush
  • For normal hair – either boar bristles or a mix of both

Types of hair brushes and their uses

In this article I will go over the types of brushes that you should have to give you the best results for growing out your hair, styling and keeping it in good shape.

The type of brush that you should use depends on your hair type. Below I will describe the types of materials used and the type of brushes for your hair type.

Wide Tooth Comb

A wide tooth comb is typically used for hair that is damp and wet hair. They are good for all hair types, and really help minimize the damage that can be caused by brushing when the hair is wet.

The wide tooth comb is gentle on the hair and good for getting the hair in place, ready for blow drying and styling later. Always use either your finger or a wide tooth comb if you ever try to brush your hair when it’s wet because it will be far less likely to snag the hair and cause it to break.

Materials: Combs can be made out of different materials, including plastic and different types of wood.

Who should use: This is suitable for all hair types

Fine Tooth Comb

Fine tooth combs have smaller teeth and are generally great for styling the hair,  parting the hair, and creating fine details.

Materials:  Fine tooth combs are usually made using plastic, but  usually plastic or wood.

Paddle Brush

This is a brush that I use often because I have very long hair that is pretty straight. A paddle brush, well, looks like the shape of a paddle if you hadn’t guessed, and it’s great for detangling hair, and smoothing it out.

The paddle brush does make the hair a little flat, meaning that it’s not great if you’re looking to get a voluminous looking, but it makes straight hair look great. I also find that it feels nice on my scalp when brushing! I recommend This Paddle Brush.

The design of it is so that there is an air-filled compartment under the rubber and bristles, and this helps the brush to conform to the shape of your head and minimize pulling of the hair when you’re brushing. And I can attest, this brush hardly ever cause pulling of the hair and does a great job. The paddle brush is the brush that I use most often.

Also, never use a paddle brush to detangle hair curly or wet hair.

Materials: They can be made with different materials like wood and plastic. The bristles on a Paddle Brush often use either boar bristle, nylon, or even horse hair, among others.

Who should use: People with long and thick hair that straightens easily should use a paddle brush. Also great for just about any other hair type whether it be thin, thick, natural and curly.

Vent Brush

A vent brush is a brush which allows good airflow throughout when you are brushing the hair while styling with heat. Vent brushes also allow for faster blow drying time

Vent brushes can be circular or they can be flat. Which brush is right for you depends on what you want to use it for. They

Materials: Vent Brushes are usually made from either plastic or nylon. Round ceramic vent brushes also allow the brush to heat up and help create more curly and bouncy hair.

Who should use: Anyone with medium hair length would benefit from a vent brush. They can be used to create great volume in the hair and making it looser at the ends.

Classic Brush

These brushes tend to be good for all hair types. They are round / oval shaped and good for all types of hair. They also, like the paddle brush tend to be cushioned, allowing for less pulling on the hair and a gently brush.

Materials:  Often made from plastic and wood. The bristles on classic brushes are usually either boar, synthetic or a mix.

Who should use: Suitable for all hair types

Wet Brush

I’m sure you can probably figure out this one! A wet brush is ideal for Yeah, you guessed it. Detangling wet hair!

The bristles are quite flexible and soft, so it doesn’t snag the hair and cause it to break, unless the harder bristles on other brushes.

Who should use: ideal for people with naturally curly and thicker hair.

how to clean and disinfect Hair Brushes

So now that you’ve chosen a brush, you want it to last a really long time, and that means you’ll have to take care of it, including disinfecting it from time to time. Brushes tend to pick up all kinds of dirt, microbes and other not-so-nice stuff, so it’s a good idea to clean and sanitize hair brushes.

How do you clean and disinfect a hairbrush? See the video below from instructions:

Since you made it this far …

You must be really into this topic! 🙂 So here’s a bit more:

Does brushing hair make it grow?

Brushing your hair will not make it grow faster per se, but the way you brush your hair is super important because if you’re not brushing it correctly, then you can end up with hair that is damaged and not healthy.

The act of brushing allows the oils from the scalp to go down the hair and make it less brittle and stronger. Also, brushing may stimulate the scalp and increase blood to the area, and this is good because more nutrients will be delivered to the scalp and hair follicles which are producing the hair.

It’s important to pick a good quality brush that won’t damage your hair. So invest in a quality one. Also, most people often use several different brushes as I already mentioned. So you might want at least two or three.

Who invented the hair brush?

Hair brushes have been used for a long time, thousands of years. Even as far back as the Romans, and Egyptians, there is evidence that grooming was common place with comb-like tools.

The first synthetic hair brush was invented in 1898 by Lyda A Newman.

In Britain, William Kent is the world’s oldest hair brush manufacturer. He began creating hair brushes back in 1777. Each bristle had to be hand stitched! Which as you can imagine, took quite a while.

Indian herbs for hair growth

Indian Herbs For Hair Growth

Powerful Indian Herbs For Hair Growth

Whether you are trying to stop hair loss or help your hair grow faster, Indian herbs have long been recognised as having properties which can help treat conditions that contribute to hair loss, as well as supporting the body to help grow thicker and stronger hair.

Herbal remedies are used by many people who wish to go the natural route, rather than put medications into their body which may cause serious health problems when used long term.

Many Indian herbs are used in a practice called Ayurvedic Medicine, which started around 3000 years ago in India. It covers all aspects of health, from the mind to the body, to create wellness.

5 Indian herbs and remedies for hair growth

Below are a few different herbs that have been traditionally known to help with hair loss and for growing healthy, thick hair.

1. Indian Gooseberry (Amla)

A wonder berry from India. It’s believed to be one of the most important medicinal plants in Indian medicine. Amla is often used to to treat a variety of diseases and has powerful anti inflammatory effects from its rich composition of phytochemicals.

Indian Herbs for hair loss

Amla can be used for hair growth in three different ways:

  • Amla can be eaten because it’s a fruit, or you can use the amla juice and drink it. You can simply add with some water or you can put it into a juice or smoothie perhaps. It’s also readily available in many stores.
  • Amla oil can be used directly on the scalp, which will help stimulate hair growth and possibly help premature greying of the hair. Just leave it on scalp and hair for 30 minutes or so, and then rinse it all out.
  • Amla can be taken as a supplement to help support overall health. Many people buy it in powder form, and can be mixed with some honey.

The use of Amla for hair growth is certainly something to try if you find that your hair growth has slowed down or you’re experiencing abnormal levels of hair fall and it isn’t just seasonal hair loss. Take a look at this powder form  which can be used as a mask and also mixed with other things like henna.

2. Brahmi

Brahami is a well known remedy to help improve hair and create thicker hair growth. It’s often used after grinding into a powder, which can be used in combination with other ingredients to create a paste, oil,  or can be mixed with coconut water or oil.

Brahmi can also be mixed with Amla to become an even more effective hair treatment.  Like Amla, Brahmi also has many properties which makes it beneficial for general health of the body and the mind.

After applying Brahmi to the hair, wash the hair thoroughly after about 30 – 45 minutes.

Brahmi will help condition the scalp and enhance blood circulation around the scalp, which helps strengthen hair from its root to the ends.

You should be able to purchase in your local store, but if not, there are ready-made Brahmi Oils.

3. Hibiscus

One of the teas I sometime enjoy has been Hibiscus, but it was only recently that I discovered  that this flower actually helps hair growth!

hibiscus flower for hair growth

It has long been known in Ayurvedic medicine to promote hair health by stimulating hair follicles to go into active growth phase, as well as help condition the hair when applied to the hair directly.

Although the flower itself has beneficial effects on hair growth, one study found that a leaf extract from hibiscus is actually more potent than the flower.

Luckily, we can use both for hair growth. It can also be used in many different ways:

  • Infused in an oil
  • Hair mask
  • Added to Shampoo & Conditioner

Hibiscus may also be added together with Amla and Brahmi to create a powerful combination for hair growth.

Hibiscus Tea is also found in many stores. So next time you’re there, pick some up!

4. Bhringraj

Bhringraj is another popular herb that is often used to treat hair loss. Bhringraj oil, when massaged into the hair, is thought to rejuvenate the hair and increase blood circulation, thus stimulating hair growth.

This herb can be used for various conditions such as: hair loss, dandruff, and can help if you have frizzy hair.

You may use this Bhringrah oil once or twice a week for 30 minutes before washing it off. To prepare for use, you can put some dried Bhringraj leaves in coconut oil and let it sit out in the sun for two days until the colour turns light green.

5 HorseTail

Nope, nothing to do with horses in case you were wondering. This is a plant, otherwise known as Equisetum arvense. For a long time this plant has been used for many health related conditions, even as far back as the Romans.

horsetail for hair growth

Horstail is primarily used as a supplement to help stop hair loss. In fact, a study which was published in 2015 showed that Horstail (main ingredient) in combination with other extracts was shown to improve hair growth and significantly decreased hair shedding in women.

The study was also double-blind, placebo-controlled which is the gold standard for evaluating the effectiveness of supplements and medicines.

The power of ayurvedic medicine

Although there is much anecdotal evidence behind the effectiveness of these treatments, they have been shared for thousands of years. Now, scientists are discovering that these herbs and plants do possess some ability to improve human health and our hair.

While I don’t think that natural medicine should be always relied upon, I think that it can compliment modern medicine and a healthy lifestyle to create the best possible health.

dry shampoo good or bad

Dry Shampoo – Good or Bad?

Dry shampooing might be convenient, but is it good or bad for your hair?

Dry shampoo might be a life saver to make the hair look a little bit better when it’s feeling a little bit greasy, but it’s not a great idea to use it all the time, and certainly not a replacement for your regular shampoo that’s for sure..

I personally use dry shampoo because my hair can get oily quite fast. I do like the feeling and the way my hair looks after a proper wash using my regular shampoo or clarifying shampoo, which I use about every 2 weeks or so.

But sometimes having a dry shampoo at hand in the time of nee is good. I usually stick to dry shampoo brands which have natural ingredients and are cruelty free.

There’s also Batiste, which are a popular brand that a lot of people like when it comes to dry shampoos.

dry shampoo: good or bad?

Well, let’s just first say that dry shampoo itself is not bad. The ingredients used in dry shampoos are pretty safe and don’t tend to cause damage directly to the hair itself. There are however many different pros and cons that I think are definitely worth mentioning, so you can better decide if you want to give dry shampoo a go.

The pros of using dry shampoo

    1. Washing your hair every day with shampoo products which strip away all of the oils from the hair is not great, so using a dry shampoo to lengthen the period between washes might actually be a good thing.
    2.  It helps increase volume in the hair. If the hair feels weighed down and a bit flat, using dry shampoo can help boost the volume of your hair so it looks better. This is great for women and men who have fine hair especially.
    3. You’ll probably be using less heat on your hair. Using hair dryers, flat ironing and other things when styling can damage your hair.
    4. It’s just simply convenient. If you don’t have the time to wash your hair all the time, especially if you’re active, the dry shampoo can help.
    5. It’s good for people who have trouble washing their often because of a physical reason.

The CONS of using dry shampoo

    1. The main con of using dry shampoo is that it really doesn’t clean the hair properly and remove all of the build up that you have in your hair. So therefore, as I said, it’s not a an adequate replacement  It should just complement your regular wash routine.
    2. Not great for those who suffer from scalp issues like dermatitis, dandruff, and other problems. It can, if used frequently,  make the problem worse.
    3. Dry shampoos can cause the scalp to start producing less oil over time. You’re basically training your scalp to produce less oil because it’s not being washed properly.
    4. Some shampoos leave some residue behind and flakes. Not a great look!
    5. It can make the hair look dull if you get into the habit of using it all the time without properly washing your hair with regular shampoo.

Should you use a dry shampoo?

Well that depends. If you’re an active person and you sweat a lot, plus you have oily hair in general, then sure, I think having at hand and using a dry shampoo can be convenient and useful for times when your hair looks bad, but you don’t really have enough time to wash it. My hair tends to get oily a little fast, so for me having a dry shampoo is super useful.

If your hair is a little on the dry side, and you don’t need to wash it all that often anyway, then I’d say you probably don’t need a dry shampoo as part of your hair routine unless you’re lazy when it comes to washing your hair or you don’t think you’ll have access to a shower or bath for some time . 🙂

If you do decide to try out a Dry Shampoo product, then the things to look out for when buying a dry shampoo are the following:

  1. Make sure that it has natural ingredients and doesn’t contain anything that will  irritate your scalp.
  2. Avoid products with parabens and other toxic ingredients.
  3. I usually go for the cheap brands and save my money for more expensive shampoos and conditioners. However, this is entirely up to you. There are some good cheap options available, which I think are fine. But you can also try the more expensive salon brands.

How to use the dry shampoo

To get the best results from the shampoo, you want to make sure that you’re using it correctly.

  • Don’t use it on wet hair.
  • Spray at a distance of at least six inches from the hair. You don’t want to concentrate it too much in one part.
  • Try to section the hair and make sure it’s sprayed equally all over.
  • Bush your hair afterwards so you can help spread the powder across the hair shafts.
  • And of course, always best to read the instructions.

Also one last thing… because the process of shampooing your hair allows you to essentially exfoliate the scalp and remove dead skin, consider adding a product that will exfoliate the scalp like a hair mask.

Best Hair Dryer To Prevent Damage

best hair dryer to prevent damageChoosing A Hair Dryer that won’t cause damage and will DRy HAIr FAST

I’m a big proponent of letting your hair dry naturally, but many times that’s just not possible. Fortunately there are good quality hair dryers available that work with you to prevent heat damage. There are also useful methods for how you can blow dry your hair without damaging it, and I’ll talk about those later.

Since I don’t have all the time in the world to let my hair dry every time I wash it, I need to use a hair dryer sometimes. So, investing in a good hair dryer which doesn’t cause damage and can dry the hair quickly is an important investment for anyone who is trying to grow and maintain long hair that is healthy.

There are many different criteria that we should look out for when we purchase a hair dryer. The key things that you should look for are the following:

  • At least 1800 watts and above.
  • Has Ionic Technology
  • You are able to use attachments
  • Heat settings and Airflow settings
  • Cool Shot Button
  • Long cable

Before deciding…

Remember that you’re investing in something that you are going to be using often and possibly for years. So think about that when deciding which one you want to go for. Choosing a quality product will always give better results.

I have listed below three different Hair Dryers that will dry and style your hair without causing hardly any heat damage (if any) in the process.

  1.  Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer (high-end professional hair dryer)
  2. The T3 Featherweight Luxe 21 Hair Dryer (mid-range professional hair dryer)
  3. Kadori Professional Blow Dryer (low-end professional hair dryer)

1. The Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer (high end)

So, you’ve probably heard of Dyson vacuum cleaners, which are pretty good! Well, you can expect nothing less from their Supersonic Hair Dryer.

This hair dryer meets all of our criteria and some more. It contains smart technology using it’s microprocessor to measure temperature of the air flow at 20 times per second, and intelligently adjusts the heating element as you dry your hair, which means that your hair never overheats and you don’t risk damaging your hair because it stays at a constant temperature.

The hair dryer comes with many features and accessories such as: 4 Heat Settings, 3 Airflow Settings, Cold Shot, Ionizer, Filters, Concentrator, Diffusor and more.

It is expensive, but this hair dryer would be my top pick. Watch the video below and also Click to see more details.

How their technology helps prevent damage when blow drying.

2. The T3 Featherweight Luxe 2i Hair Dryer

This hair dryer works great for people with thick hair and also generates negative ions, meaning you can dry your hair much faster than with regular cheap blow dryers.

With tourmaline + SoftAireTM technology, it was proven to be healthier than air-drying. It also won best beauty breakthrough in 2013.

It include many different features, including: 2 Speed Settings, 3 Heat Settings, Cool Shot Button, Concentrator Long  ft cord, among things.

This hair dryer is an excellent choice for those of us who can’t afford the more expensive option like the Dyson, but still want a quality hair dryer that will get the job done well and last a long time. Click to more details.

3. Kadori professional blow dryer 2500 x ceramic with ionic technology

A great hair dryer from Kadori, which is a more affordable hair dryer without breaking the bank. It also has Ionic technology, and is 1875 watts.

Using the L I A 2500 x-air technology, Kadori claims that its hair dryer can reduce time to trying by up to 70%, which means much less heat damage. Not bad for a lower priced, professional hair dryer.

The hair dryer also has several features including: 2 Wind Speed power settings, 3 temperature settings, and a cool shot button

It also has a longer cable than the other two at 11ft, which gives more freedom to move around.

The dryer also has a diffuser and concentrator included in the box as well.

See more information here.

What to look for when choosing a hair dryer

There are a few important things that you need to look out for if you want to buy the best hair dryer to keep your long hair looking healthy and attractive. Not investing in a good quality hair dryer will make it much more difficult to maintain long hair, unless you have your own schedule and aren’t ever leaving the house.

blow drying with less damage

More power, less damage

Choose a hair dryer that has more power. I would recommend a hair dryer that is at least 1800 watts. If you have thick hair like me, you probably want to go for something a bit more powerful. The less time that you have the hair dryer heating your hair, the less damage there will be.

Negative Ions

If you want to dry your hair fast, then look for an ionic function on the hair dryer. This will help evaporate moisture more quickly, and so you’ll spend less time blow drying your hair, which again means less damage.

To help diffuse or concentrate heat, many hair dryers come with attachments that will be useful depending on your hair type and how you want to style your hair.

Attachments

Attachments like concentrators and diffusers are important for certain types of hair, different styles and protecting from concentrating too much heat in one area.

Has heat settings and cool shot button

You’ll want blow dryer that has various heat settings. This seems like a no-brainer, right? We need more speed and less heat. A cool shot button is also useful to prevent over-drying of the hair. When your hair is mostly dry, perhaps a little damp, just use the cool shot button and finish off.

Quality material and light

Many of the professional hair dryers are made with better quality materials and so they will last longer, and feel lighter than the cheaper models.

Long Cable

Having a longer power cord is important for a couple of reasons. One reason is that it’s safer and gives you more room to move around. If you’re drying someone else’s hair or your own, and the power socket isn’t near, then having a longer cord is useful. It’s also not recommended to use an extension cable to these devices either because of the power they draw.

How to dry your hair with minimal damage

If you’re drying your hair incorrectly, then you can easily damage your hair, making it look dull and dry. But I guess you probably know that by now.

There  was a study that really surprised me when I read it a few years ago. It basically shows that not only can you dry your hair with very little damage, but drying your hair with a hair dryer is less damaging than air drying! Who would have thought?

As long as the temperature did not exceed 95 degrees C,  and the hair dryer was held at a distance of approximately 15 cm with continuous motion, there was actually less damage than drying the hair naturally.

If you were to use the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer then these overheating issues won’t be a concern because their microprocessor enables the hair dryer to automatically adjust, so it remains at a constant temperature.

But if you’re using some of the cheaper options, like most of us, then this is good news because no longer do we have to worry so much about damaging our hair when using a hair dryer.

Girl sleeping on the bed

Satin Head Scarves For Sleeping

Why You Should wear a Satin HAIR scarf when you go to bed

There are many reasons why women with long hair (and some men perhaps) should consider wearing a scarf, cap or something, just to protect their hair when they sleep – if they want to keep their long hair in really great condition.

If you have really long hair, you’ll totally get what I mean! The twisting, turning, and rubbing against the pillows leaves your hair in less-than-perfect shape. I’ve woken up more than a few times with crazy hair! I think they call it “bed head?” 🙂

But it’s a pretty easy problem to solve. And there are very good reasons why you should try to wear something like a satin head scarf at night to protect your hair.

Caring for your hair at night is super important in the process of growing out your hair. A good hair routine can make all the difference between success and failure.

There many different styles and different materials to choose from. You can either choose a silk headscarf or a satin headscarf. As a vegan, I think going for a satin headscarf would be better, but it’s entirely up to you.

So why should you wear Satin scarf to bed?

Below are five different reasons and benefits you’ll get by using either a head scarf, cap or hair bonnet at night.

1. You Save Time (in the morning)

Some days I wake up and my hair is great, it’s kind of wavy, and doesn’t need much brushing. And then there are some days I wake up when my hair really tangled and just a mess. The worst is when I’m late for something and I’m trying to brush my hair, but at the same time not destroy it in the process!

Well, with something to protect the hair at night and stop it from getting all tangled in the first place, this would save a lot of time than what would otherwise be spent meticulously trying to detangle hair before heading off to work in the morning!

2. Your Hair is Better Hydrated

If you’re sleeping on cotton pillows, this can cause moisture loss from your hair and cause it to become dry and brittle, which can ultimately lead to split ends. You’ll also notice a lot less frizz going on as well!

People with naturally curly hair will definitely benefit most from using a head scarf at night because curly hair tend to be a lot more dry and prone to breaking.

3. Less hair pulling, Less hair loss

Most people use cotton pillows to sleep on, and if you do too, then you also risk pulling and breaking your hair because of the friction that the cotton creates. Wearing a head scarf will stop this from happening, so you’ll experience less hair hair breakage and thus faster hair growth.

4. No Soreness

Have you ever woken up with a part of your scalp feeling sore? Well, I have. It’s because the hair is being pulled into a position that is not normal. For people who wear hair bands and put their hair in a pony tail, this can also cause the problem. This problem can also be solved by using a hair scarf.

5. Good for skin!

If you’re using products in your hair, or heavy conditioners, then this product ultimately ends up on the pillow, which can of course cause breakouts. The natural oils from your hair also get absorbed by the pillows too. By wearing a scarf at night, you will not just being doing your hair a favor, but your skin will thank you as well. Using a satin pillow case would also be a great idea!

And to finish…

Before I leave you with a little video, I hope you now understand why caring for your hair at night is really important. I think a night routine is one of the things people most neglect when it comes to their skin and hair.

In the long tun, by taking those extra steps to care for your hair, it’ll help the growing process, make the hair just more healthier looking, and it’ll simply save time!

Spearmint Tea For Hair Loss

Spearmint Tea For Hair Loss

Does Spearmint Tea Stop Hair Loss?

Spearmint is added to many different things like confectionery, chewing gums and different types of teas, but usually not as a main ingredient.

Spearmint tea is very refreshing to drink. There are actually many different types of mint plants, but the most popular is peppermint and spearmint. Spearmint tea has become a daily beverage of mine, and often it’ll be the first thing that I drink in the morning. 🙂

One thing many people don’t know is that the mint plant might be a great addition to prevent male pattern baldness and hair loss in women. Mint is a natural anti-androgen, which has been proven in studies to lower free testosterone.

Will Spearmint Tea Help Hair Loss?

The studies that have been published in recent years focused on a condition called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome,  which can cause hirsutism in women as a result of elevated levels of testosterone.

spearmint tea for hair loss

Spearmint was shown to be an effective anti-androgen in women when they drank spearmint tea up to twice a day for 30 days. Their levels of free testosterone dropped significantly, and the women reported better quality of life.

The researches noted that due to the short length of the trial, there wasn’t enough time to see significant clinical improvement, but hair cycle / growth takes time, and the trial needed to be longer. However, the fact remains that spearmint did act as an anti-androgen, and therefore if taken long enough, there will be real benefits.

What does this have to do with hair loss?

Given these results, and what we know about the causes of male pattern baldness, taking spearmint as a supplement or drinking spearmint tea would be a great addition to  one’s hair growth regimen.

Spearmint is a natural plant, and has been used for literally thousands of years and is pretty safe to drink. In men, because testosterone is higher, the amount of spearmint that might need to be taken could be higher.

I have personally drank up to six cups per day for years, but if you don’t feel like drinking that, or maybe it’s too expensive, you can also find spearmint leaf extract supplements as well.

By lowering the amount of free testosterone, you are also lowering the conversion of testosterone to DHT.

One of the side benefits of taking spearmint is that my skin is a lot less oily. I have also heard other anecdotal reports on that over at acne.org forums. So if you have greasy hair, then this supplement could also help that as well.

If spearmint reduces hair on the body and face, does spearmint tea reduce hair growth on the head?

A question that I hear all the time when I recommend spearmint and mention how it helps block hair growth, so I can understand the confusion.

But the answer is no, spearmint does not reduce the growth of hair on your head. The hair growth on the face is very sensitive to testosterone signalling, which triggers hair growth, and this is why it’s thought that it could be effective for hirsutism.

The problem is that with the scalp, and depending on genetic factors, the hair follicles can be very sensitive to DHT, which is created by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. And so by reducing free testosterone, you are also reducing DHT (the main hormone which causes hair loss in men).

And if you’re also worried about reduction in beard growth if you’re a man, then no need to worry. Spearmint will have a very minor (if any) effect on beard growth. The  only way to stop that is through laser.

Which is better? Supplement or Tea?

Why not both? I personally drink spearmint tea and I take spearmint capsules every day. There is no difference to the effects that you’ll see if you chose one over the other. if you’re drinking five or more cups of spearmint tea every day, then you might be back and fourth to the toilet.

But if you decide to go for the supplements instead, then you can enjoy over healthy teas as well. I take Swanson brand of spearmint leaf extract, but you can find many different spearmint supplements.

There are also different types of spearmint teas that you can also get. It’s very difficult to find pure spearmint tea at the regular store, as they usually combine it with other mints or teas. You must choose 100% spearmint tea, otherwise you’re going to have to drink many more cups of tea, which could also be quite costly.

One of the brands that I’ve just started using since I can’t get hold of palanquin spearmint tea more recently is called “Traditional Medicinals Organic Spearmint Tea.”

IN conclusion

Try out spearmint tea in combination with other things you’re doing and see if it makes a difference. You’ll want to give it at least 3-6 months, and by that time you should know if it’s working for you or not.

I think spearmint tea by itself might not completely stop hair loss in men, it would be a good addition to a hair growth regimen if you have one.

Spearmint should be even more effective for women because women naturally have lower testosterone levels anyway.

I’ve been drinking spearmint tea for years and never experienced any side effects from it. So at the very least, it’s very unlikely to do any harm.

Good luck in growing your hair!  If you have any questions, please feel free to comment below! 🙂

Foods That Can Cause Hair Loss

Which foods cause hair loss?

I get a lot of people asking me: “What do you eat to make your hair grow so long?” – and I tell them of course. But what is asked a lot less is the another important question: “what are the foods that can speed up and cause hair loss?” It’s an important question, as you’ll learn in a minute.

See, everything we put in our body has some kind of effect, either negative, neutral, or positive.

When we eat foods, the sugar, fats, and the protein, all get digested by the body, and various chemical reactions are happening, hormones are spiking, and this has a cascade effect on the cells in our body.

Below are some of the foods that you should either completely avoid (if you have the will power) or you should limit to no more than say once or twice a week.

Foods that are bad for hair growth

Below I will share the categories of foods which you should try to stay clear from. Foods can have a real impact on how our hair looks, the rate at which it grows, and how much it sheds.

That doesn’t mean that you can’t have them every now and then, it’s just that you should limit your intake if you want to maintain your hair and prevent hair loss.

Eating a poor diet will show on the outside with your skin and your hair. If you eat the right foods, and avoid the bad ones, you’re giving yourself the best possible chance to reach your genetic potential.

Refined carbohydrates are bad for your hair

Refined foods can cause hair loss

Whether they are from processed cereals, biscuits, cakes, candy bars, they are all bad news for your hair and skin.

High sugar intake is known to contribute to increased levels of stress hormones, inflammation and other negative effects that switch off the immune system, and dial down our ‘protective genes’ in our cells. High levels of glucose also causes glycation, which will age your skin.

If you can, stick to foods which have complex carbohydrates. With the fiber being intact, the body will release sugar slowly into the blood stream and this will help keep your cells healthy and stop your hair from shedding and falling out.

Too much Alcohol can cause hair thinning

Too much alcohol can cause hair thinning

I personally never drink alcohol. I’ve never liked it. But if you’re the person who likes a drink, then make sure it’s not too much, or this can have bad consequences on your hair. Alcohol can actually decrease the absorption of some nutrients like thiamine, folic acid, zinc, and B12.

If you do like a drink,  may I recommend Red Wine?

Red wine has significant amounts of a compound known as Resveratrol, which is a powerful antioxidant and can partially mimic the effect that calorie restriction has on the body, which is known to increase lifespan in animals.

Fried foods are bad for your hair

Fried foods may cause hair loss

Fried foods contain heated hydrogenated oils that are super bad for your body and for you hair.

If there is one food that will wreck your hair and health, it is fried foods.

Fried foods have been linked with oily skin and hair loss by increasing the rate at which testosterone is converted to DHT, which is the main hormone that causes hair loss in men.

Don’t go (brazil) nuts! you might lose your hair

foods that can can cause hair loss

Brazil nuts are an excellent source of Selenium, which is super important for our immune system, nails, our hair, and many other things. But don’t go and eat the whole packet of Brazil nuts or you might see your hair falling out

Brazil nuts are packed full of selenium, you only need one or two to meet your daily requirement of of the mineral. And while you don’t often hear about people overdosing on selenium from Brazil nuts, it’s entirely possible that there is some person out there who will, so I thought I’d add it to the list of foods to watch out for! 🙂

In conclusion

You have some power over how your hair grows, so try to feed your body well, and rest should take care of itself.

Aim to include a high percentage of natural and healthy foods in your diet, and your hair will grow much better with less shedding than if you if ate rubbish.
